MSSL Location

MSSL is located near Holmbury St. Mary in the Surrey Hills.

Wireless Internet Access

Guest wireless access will be available in the MSSL common room and library. Upon arrival, open a web browser and follow the registration instructions on the wireless intercept page.

Rooms and equipment

The plenary session on Thursday 14 December will be in the common room. Breakout sessions on Friday will occur in the common room and the library. Digital projectors will be available in both rooms. Coffee and lunch will be served in the main hall outside the common room.

Getting to MSSL

By plane

Easyjet flies to Gatwick Airport from Edinburgh, and British Airways flies to Gatwick from Manchester and a few other cities around the UK. From Gatwick, rent a car or take a taxi to MSSL; the journey takes ~45 minutes.

By train

It is recommended to get the train to Guildford - there are several trains and plenty of taxis for the 30 minute journey to MSSL. There are fewer trains (and fewer taxis) to Dorking, a 20 minute journey to MSSL. Only the adventurous should attempt Gomshall or Ockley; be prepared to walk the 4 miles to MSSL.

• From London Waterloo to Guildford:
  • fast trains (33 mins) depart on the hour and half hour.
  • slow trains (~1 hour) depart at various intervals.
• From London Victoria to Guildford:
  • trains (47 mins) depart at 36 and 6 past the hour.
• From Reading to Guildford: trains departing at 34
  • fast trains (34 mins) depart at 34 minutes past the hour
  • slower trains (43 mins) depart at at 4 minutes past the hour

By car

• From M25: Take exit 9 (Dorking / Leatherhead) south on the A24. In Dorking, follow signs to the A25 west, signposted Guildford. Stay on A25 until Abinger Hammer and turn left onto the B2126, Felday Road (signposted Ockley, Horsham). Drive 3 miles to Holmbury St. Mary. Follow road around to left (past church on the right) and turn right on Pitland Street, signposted Peaslake and MSSL. Drive a further mile to bear left into MSSL's north entrance.
• From Gatwick airport: Follow signs to the M23 south (signposted Brighton). Take the M23 to exit 11 and take the 3rd exit to the A264 (signposted Horsham). Stay on the A264 to Crawley, and then take the A24 north (signposted London, Dorking). Stay on the A24 for 4.8 miles and turn left on the B2126, Coles Lane. Stay on the B2126 to Holmbury St. Mary, and then turn left on Pitland Street, signposted Peaslake and MSSL. Drive a further mile to bear left into MSSL's north entrance.
• From Guildford: Follow signs to A25 east, signposted Dorking. Stay on A25 until Abinger Hammer and turn right onto the B2126, Felday Road (signposted Ockley, Horsham). Drive 3 miles to Holmbury St. Mary. Follow road around to left (past church on the right) and turn right on Pitland Street, signposted Peaslake and MSSL. Drive a further mile and bear left into MSSL's north entrance.
• From Cranleigh: Take the B2127 east towards Ewhurst and Forest Green. In Ewhurst, go right at the roundabout onto Ockley Rd to continue on the B2127. In 3/4 of a mile, you can turn left onto Holmbury Rd and drive a further 1 mile to bear right into MSSL's south entrance. (Note: Holmbury Rd can be difficult to spot - if you miss it, simply follow signs around to Holmbury St. Mary, take a left on Pitland St, and drive 1 mile to MSSL's north entrance.)

Parking at MSSL

There is currently no parking in the lab's north drive due to construction work. There are two options:

• South drive - early birds can go through the lab's north or south entrance and park along the south drive (down the hill from the main building)
• Temporary lot behind the lab - do not go in either the north or south entrances. Either stay on Holmbury Hill Rd (if approaching from Holmbury St. Mary) or turn right onto Holmbury Hill Rd from Holmbury Rd (if approaching from Ewhurst). There is a steep back entrance to MSSL from Holmbury Rd - turn into this driveway and either park along the right or turn left at the bottom of the driveway into the gravel car park.
