Possible solutions

• Go via Registry
  • Data information will only be as up to date as latest registry harvest
  • Extract metadata directly from data headers cf IDHA
  • Could be easy modest improvement
  • Still only as good as headers - probably no quality metadata
  • How will Registry info be provided anyway?
  • How good is existing automated harvesting?

Possible solution: For any given data collection, in general, basic data quality and some other characterisation aspects (e.g. provenance) are stable, as are some aspects of coverage (e.g. wavelength coverage of INT-WFS). Data provider identifies aspects which are stable on timescale of Registry harvesting so the relevant metadata can be added to the response from AstroSwift .

NVO Datascope Critique

Issues to address re adaptation of NVO DataScope as is. Perhaps we can't change much of this initially as I understand first goal will be to reproduce DataScope 's cone and SIAP searches and expand to include harvesting from UK-based resources such as LEDAS at Leicester and Edinburgh resources such as SuperCosmos .

• Science
  • metadata poorly defined or missing in many cases => scientifically useless!
    • example1: 2MASS fundamental column name "grade" for given source detection (presumably related to detection likelihood value) undocumented
    • example2: 1XMM - fundamental column unit such as 1XMM exposure times not provided
  • Query button ("?") to link to AstroGrid registry where applicable not NVO: more detail re metadata is available for cases such as above

• Technical
  • AstroScope will need additional button to save resources (at least VOTable) to MySpace as well as Aladin/OASIS analysis buttons - ideally through dashboard workbench including object name, region size etc in workflow?
  • OASIS/ALADIN analysis sessions for given data resource overwrite each other - need to keep both for comparison!
  • possible tech problems giving OASIS session freeze?
  • on auto-reloading of multiple resources, previously checked items become unchecked at next refresh - user may not realise
  • prefer default sub-image for given mission resource in all output cases (#1 in table?)
