We'll use this page as a starter for ideas about how to create a resource registry for
AstroGrid.
As a subset, let's look at how we can create an
OntologyBasedRegistry.

CliveDavenhall just sent out an email about a registry discussed at the 14SSDBM conf:
A few weeks ago I attended the 14SSDBM conference on scientific and statistical databases (there is a brief report in the
MeetingReports page).
One of the speakers, Chris Nelson from Dimension EDI Ltd, described a resource registry that they'd written which sounded very similar to the sort of resource registry that we've discussed for
AstroGrid. (This resource registry was for use in the NESSTAR system for managing distributed statistical databases, which itself seems to have many similarities to
AstroGrid.)
The resource registry was built using the OASIS/ebXML Registry standard (details available at
http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/regrep/ ).
I think that we should both have a look at the OASIS/ebXML standard and talk to Chris and colleagues before coming to any decisions about the
AstroGrid registry. I had a brief chat to Chris after his talk and it transpires that they're based in Guildford (hello Elizabeth). He's quite happy to visit MSSL, or for some of us to visit him.
Apologies for the slightly scatter-gun distribution of this message, but I've slightly lost track of who is thinking about the resource registry.
cheers,
Clive.
I've written a short note about the information which might go in the registry:

BrownDwarfIdeasRevised is a revision of
BrownDwarfIdeasExpanded to make it easier to extract information likely to be required in a Registry of scientific data,
BrownDwarfRegistryRequirements.
DeepFieldSurveysRegistryRequirements does the same thing for the Deep Fields science case.
DataSetExampleMetadata are example
ResourceMetadata for the 2MASS and MERLIN+VLA HDF(N) datasets.

A draft schema for how to register a tabular DB independently of the services using it:
TabularDBRegistrySchema. This is an attempt to regulate the resource registrations currently being produced for PAL with
xsi:type="RdbmsMetadata".
