In Mar 2007, a proposal that Derek Raine and Tony Linde submitted to the University of Leicester's
Teaching Enhancement Forum was accepted with £7K allocated to the project. The submission is attached (see
tefapplicationform.pdf): its abstract is:
This project will use e-learning to bring the experience of the use of large facilities for research within the undergraduate curriculum. Since much of contemporary research is carried out using such large facilities, this will enhance the authenticity of the student learning experience and contribute to demonstrating the impact of research on teaching. The project will use e-Science data mining facilities of publicly accessible databases in astronomy to demonstrate the concept.
Most of the money allocated will go towards funding a summer student within the department to do the bulk of the coding. The student will be supervised by Gary Gilchrist and me. A design for the application will be worked out shortly but it will definitely be browser-based and probably built using the
Django framework which the two of us are about to investigate. The application will make use of the
AstroGrid infrastructure wherever possible, providing another demonstration of its capabilities.
We will post further details as they are worked out.
