H. Public Outreach

The following is a short statement that can be used to describe the proposal for publicity purposes.

The UK Solar System Virtual Observatory (UKSSVO) is a project to develop networked computer systems and tools to help advance UK research into the fascinating physics of our solar system. Our solar system is a wonderful natural laboratory - the Sun is the closest star, our solar system is the only place where we can sample a solar wind, and the Earth and other planets give us our best data on how stars affect planets. The UKSSVO will enable scientists to bring together observations, from spacecraft and from Earth, when previously it has often been difficult to do so. The tools they use to do this, including visualisations of the solar system as a 'virtual' object, will enable them to explore the flows of energy and matter from the Sun that ultimately sustain all life on Earth.
