We have made available a
jabber server.
Jabber is an open, XML-based protocol for instant messaging and presence.
The server name is
jabber.astrogrid.org. You don't need a precreated account; the first time you connect, your account will be automatically created. However, you will need to use the same username and password the next time you connect. I suggest that you use your
WikiName as your username.
Please note
Detailed configuration
instructions for gaim can be found
here.
You need to add users individually to your roster. Registered users at the moment are:
- AnitaRichards@jabber.astrogrid.org
- BrianMcIlwrath@jabber.astrogrid.org
- CatherineQin2@jabber.astrogrid.org
- ClivePage@jabber.astrogrid.org

Add these to your buddies (or roster or whatever) using cut-and-paste from the above
and then add yourself to the list.
Chat Rooms
Below is a list of chat rooms that we are using. Before starting a new one, please try to use one of those listed. If you do create a new chat room, add it to the list. All
AstroGrid chat rooms are on the
conference.astrogrid.org server:
- announce - everyone interested in knowing when any of the AG servers might be rebooted should connect to this room
- dev - general development issues
- demo - if we're preparing for a demo, we'll discuss the specifics here
- wgl - work group leaders (boring but not private)
Some clients that seem to work OK are as follows. All these and more can be found at
http://www.jabber.org/user/clientlist.php.
| OS | Client | comment |
| Linux | gabber | good, but needs reasonably up-to-date GNOME 1 libs |
| Linux | gaim | comes with RedHat; use Plugins button to load jabber support before you start |
| Win32 | Exodus | Neat and very functional. Kit available here |
| Win32 | Marvin | nice interface, skinnable, minimises to tray, wide roster but can be transparent |
| Win32 | Psi | thin roster, more features |
| Win32 | WinJab | simple i/f, bit buggy |
| Win32 | gaim | gaim for Win32 platform. 0.70 kit here and 0.75 kit here. Both 0.70 and 0.75 work nicely Possible problems with Chat under 0.73: 0.70 works. |
| |
| Tcl/Tk | Coccinella | messaging + chat + whiteboard |

On Windows 2000, GAIM 0.74 doesn't work properly. The IM function works but the chat rooms don't. GAIM 0.70 is OK.
