Science Verification Observing Summaries

Intro

We'll put a brief summary of what we get every night during Science Verification to keep all of you in touch with progress. The science verification programme has been scheduled 50 hours (10 hours per survey). A futher 20 hours is required for setup of the photometric standard fields and other calibration observations. The schedule and observers currently (10th April) looks like this:

UT April 8th 2005

Observer: Simon (Red Eye) Hodgkin

Conditions: Clear at start of night, probably photometric for most of the night - see attached plot from Skyprobe. Some thin patchy cirrus overhead at end of night.

Seeing: 1 arcsecond all night (confirmed towards end with Gemini)

Targets:

  • Mesostep sequence x 2
  • 11 standard fields x 4 chips x 5 filters (ZYJHK)
  • LAS x 2 MSBs (SV4 & SV1 each duration 1 hour)
  • GCS x 1 tile in Z (GCS-IC4665:1_1). Still need Y,J,H & K for this MSB

Notes:

  • Elapsed time significantly longer than OT predictions
  • Attempted LAS & GCS MSBs in spite of worse seeing - this is because although sensitivity tests will be affected, we will still be able to do useful accurate photometry/colours - hope that reasoning is okay
  • Focus went off during IC4665 observation - noticed it in only in 3rd pointing of first tile in Z. Restarted from beginning but ran out of time.
  • Array/Pipeline/Gaia behaving strangely for some of the IC4665 images - can't get iraf to work so i can't check them !

UT April 9th 2005 (second half)

Observer: Simon Dye & Simon Hodgkin

Conditions: Clear at start of night, probably photometric for most of the night - see attached plot from Skyprobe.

Seeing: 0.8-1 arcsecond all night, measurement from Gemini at 4:30am has 0.5 arcsecs. We're not seeing anything like this good. Problem ?

Targets:

  • LAS_SV_15b in YJHK (i.e. two pawprints not two tiles)
  • Virgo YJ part 2 (4 tiles)
  • hourly standards
  • Bit of a DXS tile started optimistically when seeing looked better - but it went off
  • GCS-IC4665:0_0 Done Y&J. Still need Z, H & K. So far 5 positions are not coming in with guide stars, so left unguided. We need to look at why these guide stars are not working.
  • Morning twilight sky flats in Z (NDR, 1s exp, coadds=1), J (CDS, 1s exp, coadds=1) & K (CDS, 5s exp, coadds=2). K and J flat sequences started off with quite high counts due to having to wait for Z sky brightness to increase sufficiently, then J.

Notes:

  • Elapsed time significantly longer than OT predictions - Factor 2. All MSBs will need to be revised
  • The overheads in reacquiring the guide star in a fast offset seem larger than hoped for. For a 6.4,6.4 arcsec offset the telescope really needs about 30s to settle and catch up - the penalty for not waiting is trailed images. Propose (and have implemented) 3.2,3.2 arcsecond offset. For standard star fields we are not guiding (now).

UT April 10th 2005 (second half)

Seeing: between 0.9 & 1.0 arcsecond all night, measured direct from WFCAM images.

  • GPS SV Dec -1.9 strip (1 tile in J,H&K, scheduled 16mins, actual 32mins, occasionally lost guiding when guide stars fell too close to edge of AG)
  • Hourly standards

Notes:

  • Standards MSBs went missing from database at beginning of run. Wasted 30mins figuring out how to fix problem.
  • Common theme among MSBs noticed that guide stars often lie too close to the edge of the Auto Guider's FOV. This causes AG to lose guide star regularly during jitters/microsteps.
  • No twilight sky flats taken tonight - to help keep TO's first night as short as poss.!

UT April 11th 2005 (second half)

Observer: Simon Dye

Conditions: Clear at start of 2nd half, no wind at all, looks like slightly more attenuation at low elevation compared to previous evenings (see attached plot from skyprobe: skyprobe_night4.png)

Seeing: fluctuated between 0.7"-1.0" over whole of 2nd half, measured direct from WFCAM images.

Targets:

  • Virgo YJ part 1 (4 tiles in Y&J, scheduled 25.5mins, actual 53mins)
  • Virgo HK part 1 (4 tiles in H&K, scheduled 25.5mins, actual 50 mins)
  • GCS-IC4665:0_0 (H&K obs done, still need Z for this MSB, actual 48mins)
  • GCS_2YR_SCO:1_1 (just done Z & Y - field got too low Still need JHK, actual 39mins)
  • GPS SV Dec -1.9 strip (tile in JHK, actual 30mins)
  • Hourly standards (no guide stars in MSBs)
  • Morning twilight flatfield sequence in J & K (both with CDS, 5s exp, coadds=1). J counts start at ~500 and reach ~15000, K counts start at ~4000 and reach ~35000

Notes:

  • For J twilight flat sequence, can only reach ~15000 counts before K starts to rise significantly (for same exposure in each). Draft WFCAM user guide indicates plenty of time for high J counts before K even starts to rise.

UT April 12th 2005 (second half)

Observer: Simon Dye

Conditions: Clear at start of 2nd half, no wind, (see attached plot from skyprobe: skyprobe_night5.png). Some low-lying cloud and thin cirrus started to appear by morning but observations weren't noticeably affected. Not photometric but not bad.

Seeing: At start of 2nd half, seeing was 0.8" (all measured direct from WFCAM images). Moved up to around 1.0" by morning.

Targets:

  • LAS_SV_7b_1 (YJHK, one pawprint, scheduled 3.2mins, actual 7mins)
  • LAS_SV_7b_2 (YJHK, one pawprint, scheduled 3.2mins, actual 7mins)
  • GCS_2YR_ComaBer:1_1 (filters done: Z,Y,J. Problems with guiding in this MSB - 'invalid crosshead demand position' errors generated by AG system (guide star off edge of FOV). Also a few 'guide stars' were actually galaxies. Had to do a significant no. of obs unguided.) Still need H & K for this MSB
  • GCS_2YR_SCO:1_1 (finished off JHK)
  • GPS SV Dec -1.9 strip
  • GPS SV Dec -1.9 strip (different MSB, just same name!)
  • Y band (NDR, 10s exp, coadds=1) morning flatfield sequence (counts started at 2K and went up to 30K)
  • Hourly standards (no guide stars in MSBs)

Notes:

  • Observing tonight didn't start until 1am HST (11:00 UT) due to being overridden by a gamma-ray burst alert, program ID: u/05a/18
  • WFDR4, the machine for summit processing of data from array4, ran out of disk space near the end of the first GPS MSB. This only affected summit pipelined data, not the raw data.

UT April 13th 2005 (second half)

Observer: Simon Dye

Conditions: More attenuation tonight due to haze/thin cirrus (see attached plot from skyprobe: skyprobe_night6.png). Definitely not photometric although seeing was very good. very light wind (<5pm)

Seeing: Varied between 0.7" & 0.9" all night with occasional peaks of 1.0" - 1.1" (all measured direct from WFCAM images).

Targets:

  • LAS_SV_9b_1 (YJHK, one pawprint)
  • LAS_SV_6b_1 (YJHK, one pawprint)
  • DXS SV EN01 J01 (1 tile in J. Scheduled 40min, actual 62min. Thin cirrus occasionally caused guiding problems with faint guide star. Guiding problems also occasionally caused by 'invalid crosshead demand position' - guide star off edge of FOV during offset sequence).
  • DXS SV EN01 J02 (1 tile in J. Scheduled 40min, actual 63min. Same occasional guiding problems as previous DXS MSB).
  • DXS SV EN01 K01 (Only got 1st out of 4 obs completed - need to finish remaining 3).
  • GCS-IC4665:0_0 (finished off Z filter. MSB now complete)
  • GPS SV Sky offset by PH & Dec -1.9 strip (This MSB generated the error: 'Item not in list' in the queue monitor. A modified MSB under the name 'GPS SV Sky offset by SD & Dec -1.9 strip' was created, changing the 'Sky' component in the first 3 sky obs to 'Observe' and the 'Sky' part of the DRrecipe in these 3 sky obs from 'JITTER' to 'REDUCE_SKY'. Seemed to fix error. Only got the 3 sky obs and J obs in this MSB - need to complete H & K)
  • Morning twilight flatfield sequence in H & K (both with CDS, 5s exp, coadds=1). H counts start at ~3000 and reach ~23000, K counts start at ~9000 and reach ~35000
  • Hourly standards (no guide stars in MSBs)

UT April 16th 2005 (full night)

Conditions: Cloudy + rain up to ~1am. Fog passed and humidity dropped to safe levels so dome was opened at 1:30am. Still lots of patchy cloud about (see plot from skyprobe for what its worth: skyprobe_night7.png)

  • We have collected a huge amount of SV data, most of which was taken in photometric conditions. The camera and telescope have worked well and reliably which is amazing given that these are pretty much the first nights that WFCAM has been on the telescope with decent weather. Hats off to ATC and JAC.

UT April 22nd 2005 (full night)

This was nominally the first UKIDSS survey run, but the history of poor weather in the early days of the SV phase have meant that there is still plenty to do. Thanks to Andy for allocating more SV time to each survey, and thanks to the Survey heads for responding quickly to Tuesday's request for more MSBs.

Observers: Gavin Dalton & Kaz Sekiguchi

Conditions: Clear again. Probably photometric (see plot from skyprobe_night11.png)

Seeing: Varied between 1.0"-0.8" throughout night (as measured from WFCAM images).

Targets

  • STD:M67-IV (ZYJHK)
  • UDS_SV_J (Photometric) relatively poor seeing as telescope still cooling down. -repeat problems with an unreachable guide star on the second pointing of this tile, so have swapped guide and guide2 in the remaining MSBs for this pawprint. Further problem with an unreachable guide star on the final pawprint, but not so obvious how best to rectify this one.
  • STD:GD-140-C (ZYJHK)
  • UDS_SV_K Seeing now sub 2-pixel. One minor guider glitch on one pointing in the dither pattern for the second pawprint, but otherwise seems to be cured. Glitch remains in the guider for the 4th pawprint.
  • STD:GD-153-C (ZYJHK)
  • DXS_SV_EN01_K02

  • GPS_SV Sky Test MSB (various). No guide star on the first offset and unable to look at the whole GPS_SV programme in the OT for some reason... Managed to talk to Phil Lucas and confirm that no guide stars in this part of the MSB is not a problem. Failed to complete the last set of offset skies but otherwise OK.

Notes

  • First night for two observers new to UKIRT and WFCAM. After staring vacantly at the OT and QT for some minutes I actually found this to be refreshingly simple - probably due to excellent support.
  • I noticed that the ORACDR process gets behind faster as the night goes on. Looking at the raw and reduced data directories I am wondering if this is something to do with exceeding the point at which the UNIX directory structure starts buffering heavily on all file lookups. The symptom of this problem is usually that all activity for any process that is active in the offending directory gets slower and slower. Not sure that there's an easy solution to this if this is indeed the problem...
  • At the end of the night we tried to fit in a fairly substantial GPS block that looked as if it would finish around twilight, but with short exposures here the additional overhead looks to be hitting harder than for the deeper surveys. At this point it becomes apparent that it might be useful to set up some MSBs as "end of night" blocks where observations are ordered as all J, all H, all K, so that the onset of twilight has a minimal effect. This is probably not optimal for all blocks, but could increase the effective amount of useful observing time at the end of some nights.


GavinDalton - 22 Apr 2005

UT April 23rd 2005 (full night)

Observers: Gavin Dalton & Kaz Sekiguchi

Conditions: Clear again. Probably photometric (see plot from skyprobe: skyprobe_night12.png)

Seeing: Highly variable at start of night - ambient temperature fluctuating wildly. Started on repeat of UDS-J field as the seeing looked OK at the start of the night. Seeing appeared to improve around 10:30pm to 0.75" so stayed on UDS. On GPS field seing was around 1.1, but still variable.

Targets:

  • Standards - tried to get some narrow band standards, but the predicted crash of the DR system due to lack of flats for these actually cause a problem with the TCS focussing script, and lost quite a bit of time - not helped by wildly fluctuating seeing.
  • UDS_SV_J (Photometric)
  • UDS_SV_K offset
  • DXS EN01 J3
  • DXS EN01 K5
  • More Narrow badn standards - ORACDR stopped
  • GPS Sky Offset + Rho Oph + H2
  • GPS Dec -1.9 strip (JHK no offsets)

Notes:

  • Noted some apparent ambiguities, in that GCS blocks are all asking for dark of moon, presumably for the ZYJ part. -Is there any other reason why the HK part of these blocks needs dark time?
  • Still quite a few headaches with guide stars coming up right on the edge of the guider chip so that the jitter stage throws it out of the box... This could be greatly alleviated if the jitter pattern could explicitly more the star further onto the chip, rather than off it, but I'm not sure whether this could be a real headache for the pipeline (random jitter directions for different sequences...?).
  • Flushed the arrays a couple of times (calibration sequence) at the end to try to remove some of the perisitence effects from the start of tomorrow night.

UT April 24th 2005 (full night)

Observers: Gavin Dalton & Kaz Sekiguchi

Conditions: Clear again(!). Probably photometric (see plot from skyprobe: skyprobe_night13.png), but still some Gobi dust around.

Seeing: 1" at the start. Moving around a bit, and very difficult to be sure of the true value given then mode in which the oracdr process is trying to reduce jitter frames. Best seeing measured during the night was around 0.6".

  • UDS_SV K offset (couple of guide stars really TOO FAINT for full moon)
  • UDS_SV J offset
  • More narrow band standards
  • DXS EN01 K5

Notes:

  • Got fed up with GAIA for trying to measure FWHM as frames shoot by, so tried moving to IRAF. Noticed that imexamine fails because of the unsupported ZPN projections in the WCS headers, so wrote a short proc to copy a specifed image somewhere and rip out the headers so that we can at least check the image quality. Contouring in imexam really helps to understand what's going on...
  • With this facility in place I notice that the DR process on chip 4 seems to be erroneously subtracting offset image frames from every image, so positive and negative images in all frames... No idea why!
  • I really think we need to have some update to the focus tracking model vs temperature before we start on the DXS/UDS in earnest. -I can't really comment on the other surveys, but we do seem to be spending a lot of time on focus checks and compensations, and in between the checks we find that the uncertainty is not helpful in trying to sort out other potential issues.
  • For the GPS blocks with sky offsets I've moved the offsets to be just before the target field in each band. -This means moving around more than the MSB would nominally require, but the additional overheads that we're suffering from mean that we're in danger of not completing some of these long blocks, so I assumed it was better to complete in each band with K being most likely to end up in severe twilight.

UT April 25th 2005 (full night)

Conditions: Clear again(!). Probably photometric (see plot from skyprobe: skyprobe_night14.png), but ssome high cloud away to the South.

Seeing: 1.3" at the start. Improved to around 1.1" by 10pm. Finally got to the magic 2 pixel level by about 3am.

  • LAS SV2 field (YJHK)
  • UDS_SV J -pretty much abandoned due to poor seeing
  • More narrow band standards
  • LAS MGC HK sets 1 & 2
  • some LAS sky flats
  • GCS Coma field (1.3" seeing - maybe only good for PR)
  • DXS EN01 K10 (seeing 0.8-0.9")
  • DXS EN02 K01 (seeing ~1")

UT April 26th 2005 (full night)

Observers: Gavin Dalton & Kaz Sekiguchi

Conditions: Clear again(!). Some high cloud visible at sunset, so may not be photometric (see plot from skyprobe: skyprobe_night15.png). Humidity 0.34% and pleasantly warm (5 degrees) compared to last night (-2). Cirrus actually came through around midnight... see skyprobe.

Seeing: 0.8-0.9 (J) at the start. very stable. More like 0.75" after midnight.

  • UDS_SV J offset all three of these are very nice quality.

  • Seeing was pretty reasonable around 10pm, so made some PSF plots for the four chips (see UDSJPSFs.png). Note that the PSF on chip 4 is distorted by the fact that the pipeline is subtracting offset images on this chip only for reasons that are lost on me...

Summary

1. Very little has been done on UDS, mostly because of stringent seeing requirements and pressure on time at start of night. I still cannot claim to have measured the seeing from a WFCAM image given the undersampling. My view has been to attempt UDS/DXS projects when the image FWHM reaches 2 pixels.

2. Many of the LAS tiles contained objects of interest (cool white dwarfs, brown dwarfs, high Z objects) These tiles were changed to pawprints to ensure that all these objects would get photometry during SV. A few of these pawprints containing objects of special interest remain and should be completed. The other tiles are MGC fields at around 10h.

3. GCS has completed SV obs in 2/4 clusters. Praesepe is high priority and needs time right at start of night (where pressure has been greatest). Coma Ber is the lowest priority GCS cluster.

4. The GPS has progressed slowly, mainly because of the uncertainties in how best to observe the offset skies. Phil Lucas has attempted to modify the MSBs to replace the pre-existing sky tiles with offset skies using functionality within the OT designed to handle this. Anecdotally this is not completely resolved, and the MSBs Phil has made will not work properly. Consequently, Dye and Hodgkin have modified a couple of the Lucas MSBs to work. The result is that the GPS SV folder is a bit of a mess and needs tidying up. Also note that no narrow-band imaging has been attempted.

5. I have measured a total of about 16 standard fields out of 43 in the WFCAM list spread over about 9 photometric nights. These have been observed with a total of around 90 MSBs (of which 25 have been charged to LAS and 65 to U/EC/10). I have therefore devoted a total of about 15 (handwave) hours to photometric calibration, and observed on average, each standard field about 5 times. I have done very little in the narrow band filters - enough to derive some zero points at this stage. Note that the standard MSBs do not yet fall under UKIRTCAL, nor are we clear on how to include the narrown band standards.

Proposals:

1. UDS should be prioritised over DXS at start of night.

2. DXS to add in MSBs for Elias N1 16h+57 (T_rise(alt=40)=23h30m) to add in targets for end of night.

3. LAS may want to contribute more MSBs to the SV programme. While we have a lot of pawprints, we don't have many complete tiles.

4. Would be good to do GCS Praesepe at start of night of seeing not optimal for UDS. Request more SCO OB tiles from NCH (16h-23d for end of night).

5. GPS MSBs need to be sorted out, probably with initial input from JAC and then Phil should be able to make all the changes.

6. Narrow band observations should be started in the GPS

7. Narrow band standards need to be observed

8. STH needs help to sort out the standard MSBs for finalising in UKIRTCAL
