ScienceProblem: CMESourceRegion

PrimaryActor:

Solar Scientist

ScienceGoal:

Easy identification of the source region of coronal mass ejections (CMEs).

DataSets:

EUV, soft X-ray, H-alpha

ProblemDescription:

Correct identification of the source region is crucial. In CME studies we need to know the magnetic enviroment in which they originate.

CurrentSolution:

Currently to find the source regions of CMEs a search through the data must be made 'by eye'. This is a very time consuming process involving large amounts of data from both wide band imagers and spectroscopic data. Lower coronal signatures are used which include reduction in intensity in EUV and soft X-ray (dimming), loss of filaments observed in chromospheric lines and coronal waves.

VOSolution:

Software tool to automate the search for signatures through different data sets and return only that data. Most important would be to identify when the dimming signatures are occurring as this best reflects the extent of the CME source region.
