sources identified as matching known objects
- new catalogue of target sources
- larger reference catalogue, e.g. USNO-A2
This requires a so-called "fuzzy join" on overlap of error boxes
on the sky, together with work to estimate the false-alarm rates for different
classes of objects e.g. using Bayesian probabilities.

Delmotte et al (2001) describe the cross matching of sources from the DENIS and 2MASS survey's for objects in the Magellanic clouds. Basically I band data from DENIS is added to the JH and Ks data from 2MASS ( the J band data in DENIS is of similar depth to that of 2MASS).
